Technical Challenge

For Buried Child, designer Ashley Wereley really wanted to focus on the interior decay of the family as reflected in the decay of the house.  Everything was dirty, torn and worn.  This was further heightened when she collaborated with lighting designer Solveig Bloomquist to create this look of the wall of the house rotting from within.  This made the show fun to build and probably one of my favorite sets at UMD.

Translucent Walls and Decay

The idea was we wanted to slowly reveal the decay of the house.  The walls were covered with an open weave scrim and painted so it would look solid until it was lit from the back to reveal the decay.

The walls were framed with 1x4 lumber so the frame was as thin as possible and able to virtually disappear.  The slats were put on the back side of the wall and then broken with hammer as directed by the designer.
